The GROW coaching model is a tried and tested framework used to structure coaching conversations. It is simple, yet not simplistic, and will be presented in this course as a practical tool for your coaching sessions. The strength of the GROW model lies in its ability to lead to a clearly defined outcome through four distinct stages. The coachee is actively involved in identifying problems and generating solutions, which significantly increases the likelihood of long-lasting results from each session.
Main Topics:
- Introduction to the GROW model and its history
- Developing awareness and responsibility in the coachee
- Setting short- and long-term goals using the SMART method
- Understanding reality through active listening and empathy
- Practical application of techniques in the Reality stage
- Generating and evaluating options without offering direct solutions
- Moving to action planning and assessing coachee readiness
Expected Outcomes:
By the end of this course, participants will be able to effectively apply the GROW model in a variety of coaching contexts. They will learn how to enhance the coachee’s awareness and sense of ownership, guiding them towards achieving their goals through the use of insightful questioning rather than advice-giving. Participants will also develop essential coaching skills such as active listening, building rapport, and stimulating deeper reflection—empowering them to make a meaningful and sustainable impact on individual and team development.
Target Audience:
- Professional and beginner coaches
- Leaders and managers in the workplace
- Counsellors and therapists
- Educators and academic advisors
- Anyone involved in personal development or team growth
Course Content:
- Introduction to the GROW Model
This session introduces the GROW model and provides a brief overview of its history. The model serves as a foundational framework for coaching across many professions and organisations due to its proven success. It supports individuals in achieving personal or team-based goals. - Awareness and Responsibility
This lesson helps shape your mindset for applying the GROW model. Its purpose is to raise awareness and encourage personal responsibility to unlock potential and reach goals. The aim is not to solve others’ problems or give advice, but to enable the coachee to take ownership of their actions and results. - Goal Setting
We begin with the first step in the GROW model: setting goals. While many are familiar with the SMART goal-setting method, this session focuses on applying it to both short-term and long-term goals within the coaching framework. - Reality Stage
The next stage focuses on exploring the current reality. This includes techniques that create space, foster empathy, and activate the power of active listening. - Reality in Practice
Here we explore a variety of techniques for use in the Reality stage, all designed to significantly increase your coaching effectiveness. - Reality in Practice 2
This session completes the set of Reality stage techniques, teaching you to grasp deeper meanings behind spoken words, be patient with verbal and non-verbal cues, and recognise when it’s time to progress to the next stage. - Options Stage
This step addresses how to encourage the generation of options without giving advice and how to facilitate evaluation of those options without imposing decisions. - Way Forward
In the final stage—Will or Way Forward—we assess the coachee’s intention and readiness to move into concrete action, guiding them to create structured and achievable steps.
